S.S. No.2

Long Bay

The first school was built around 1882 by the people of the community.

The property was donated by Mr. Wagg, father of A.J. Wagg of Mindemoya and W.I. Wagg of Gore Bay.

The first teacher at this school was Mr. Dougherty Sr.

He is the grandfather of D.A. Patterson and the great-grandfather of Douglas Patterson.

No grant was received for the construction of the school. The building was 28X30 and constructed of logs with two windows on each side. Inside wooden benches extended across the room. The first 10 years the school was also used as a church until the community was able to build a Church.

In 1917 the old school house was sold and torn down. A new more modern concrete school was erected that same year. The classroom was 30x20, two cloak rooms and a teachers room.

At the time of opening, the school had 20 students.

The trustees in 1917 for the school was Mr. D. Sloss Jr., Mr. R. Clark, and Mr. H. Coulam.  The secretary was Mr. N. McDermid.

From 1943 to 1947, the school closed.

In 1947 the school reopened with 13 students.

Over the years, the school has had many small and large improvements including the installation of electricity in 1953 and a well in 1954.

In 1962, the Long Bay school house closed its doors for good and from there on the pupils where bused to Gore Bay.
