Providence Bay Women's Institute

On June 5, 1908 the Providence Bay Women's Institute was organized. The name changed to Carnarvon in 1910 and at a later date the name returned to the Providence Bay Women's Institute.

In the early 1900's there was a population of between three and four hundred people in the village. Much has been accomplished through the years by the Women's Institute. A Providence Bay Arena was thought of in 1946 and was finished construction in 1949; the Women's Institute were a tremendous help - wherever they could help out they did - by donating time, money and volunteers to the annual fair and for helping to furnish the inside of the arena.

The Providence Bay Women's Institute gave to numerous charities, made blankets and socks for the men at war, helped needy families and helped families that were burnt out.

In 1967, Centennial year, they helped renovate the Orange Hall. A grant of Two Thousand dollars was applied for, and received, to enable them to do the work, the inside of the hall was painted and a new furnace was installed. Also in Centennial year, they had six flower beds built in town. The executive at this time was, Mrs. R. Fawcett (President), Mrs. R. Dewar (First Vice), Mrs. A. Beaudin (Second Vice), Mrs. G. Dewar (Secretary-Treasurer). In 1958 they had a bathhouse built and put down at the beach.  In 1970 the Institute received some money from the tourist association to be used for a park. With this money, they had two fireplaces, two picnic tables and a bathroom built and put at the beach.

To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Institute, the women dressed in old time costumes and enjoyed and cake with there celebrations. A skit "Did You Know", consisting of six ladies was put on, a reading by Mrs. Mary Liscumb on "Mrs. Hoodless and Earland Lee, and Mrs. C.L. Galbraith gave a reading on " the house where Mrs. Hoodless was born" made up the program.  One of the oldest members, Miss Annie McNicol cut the cake.

Thank you to the family of the late Grace Dewar for providing information on the Providence Bay Women's Institute.

Grace kept a great account of the Women's Institute activities and she is dearly missed in Providence Bay.
