S.S. No.1

~ Perivale ~

In 1883 the first school house was built by Alexander Campbell and located on Lot 8, Concession 7.

The building was constructed of cedar and logs. The school equipment was made by the settlers themselves. The seats were made of two-inch unpainted planks, the blackboards were painted wood and the building was heated with a woodstove.

David Kerr was the first teacher in 1883. He was a highly educated Scot but only taught for six months and earned approximately $150.00.

C. S. Moore was the first school secretary.

During the first three years the school only operated for six months out of the year.

Discipline was apparently stricter back then - within the school twenty-seven leather straps were found in the loft when the old school house was torn down in 1907.

During the same year a new school house was constructed by Neil McColeman for a fee of $600.00.

Following Mr. David Kerr was Isabella Munro, Samuel Dougherty, Eva Srigley, Angus McLean, Andy Hall, Marshall McDonald, H.P. Kay, C.J. Hunt, Georgina Burkitt, Letitia Phillips, James Hopkin, Jessie Brown, Olga McDonald, Will Cain, J.R. Thompson, Dan Burke, Mary Clark, Jessie Thorburn, Edith Hill, Henry Gamey, Nellie Scott and Mary McLean.

Mary Thompson was the schoolhouse teacher in 1907 when the new school house was rebuilt.

In 1965 S.S. No. 1 Campbell School House was closed and the students were bused to Mindemoya.

The school house still stands today, and is used as a summer residence.
